When you open your bank’s app and look at how your investments are doing, that number is not produced there. Behind it a program reads, every night, everything that happened the day before — transactions, prices, products, customer records — and rewrites the snapshot of every single customer’s holdings before the bank opens.

My work sits inside that: writing and running those programs, and the services that then show the results in the app, on the website and to the adviser in branch. It is millions of records a night, and if a number is wrong the customer sees it the next morning.

That is why I do not hand over anything I have not checked, why I keep track of what gets rejected and not only of what passes, and why I make sure everything can be repeated identically. Those habits come from there, and they end up in everything I build afterwards, a shop’s website included.

It is not the work you would hire me for from this site. It is the reason why, when I tell you something works, I have already checked it.
